He derives an unreal amount of personal satisfaction from the fact that USC is in the same conf as Stanf, Berkley, UW,
and U Ore.
He speaks frequently about the supposed combined synergy of schools getting excess research dollars by being together in the same conference, but can't actually point to data that explains this other than the natural increases in budgets that happened across the country during the same time.
Nevertheless, he is convinced that the schools are financially so much better off together than apart. If that were true then it would be a no brainer for UCLA and USC to stay. But, either that doesn't actually matter (e.g., professors aren't about to spread their research dollars to athletics), or it isn't true, and the value he ascribes to the whole arrangement just satisfies his deep insecurity about belonging.
Who can really know. It's all amusing nonetheless. And every time he types something demeaning about the Big 12 member schools, "I get a big ol' Texas smile on my face."
