75 mph highway merged into a state highway that went down to 55 mph. I am generally pretty strict with my speed (in that I stick to speed limit + 5mph on the highway), but after a few hours of 75, it didn’t seem that fast, and the traffic was heavy enough that I didn’t turn on cruise control.
Anyway, a few miles in I see lights behind me, I look down, and I am going a touch over 70. He asks me the “do you know why I pulled you over”, and I just had a feeling that he wasn’t trying to trap me for a change, so I said something like “yeah, I do. I got off the interstate back there, I’m heading to the beach, and I didn’t realize that I had sped up until I saw your lights.”
He took my license, went to his car, and confirmed that 1. Due to my address my story about being on the interstate was true, and 2. I hadn’t had a ticket in 20 years, so he let me go with a warning.
I guess there’s a good chance he would have let me go anyway, but I think sometimes they appreciate someone who is obviously not a serial violator admit that they screwed up.
Having said that, my general advice is still to say “No I do not, officer”
