With the addition of Taggart, BYU has really been adding needed speed for B12 play across both offense and defense.
I'm going to focus this post on 100 meter times, which is more or less the standard in terms top-end speed. Now obviously there are variables where some guys accelerate very quickly and may have a faster 40yd time than what their 100M would indicate. There are also some that may not accelerate the fastest initially but once they hit their stride, they have very high top-end speed (think Bair).
I also like to use the 100M times because they're generally recorded during official meets and timed by laser. It's easy to say "I run a 4.3" that was hand timed by my friend or friendly coach, but the laser times can't be fooled. I also like that there is a searchable database (which is probably why I really like it as the baseline, ha).
I also want to post this 100M to 40yd dash conversion info below as a reference, as 40yd dash times are very relevant for football with all the starting and stopping that happens.
100m time Estimated 40-yard dash
9.79 —> 4.2
10.27 —> 4.3
10.64 —> 4.4
10.95 —> 4.5
11.21 —> 4.6
11.45 —> 4.7
11.73 —> 4.8
With that, here are all the known sub-11 second times on BYU's team currently- feel free to add to the list if I have missed any. As a reference point, I am going to start off with Gatlin Bair's numbers, as he is near world-class/olympic speed.
Gatlin Bair, Jr in HS - 10.15 in the 100M
Other times of note 4.44 40yd dash 20.41 200M.
Bair, given his official 40 is "just" a 4.44, may not actually be as "quick" but once he gets up to stride, he is flying
Rostered BYU Players w/ sub 11 seconds in the 100M
Evan Johnson, Fr. - DB - 10.41 100M as a Sr. in HS - Evan might be the fastest player on the BYU Football team. He's likely a legit 4.3 40 guy.
21.49 200M
Cody Hagen, mission, will be a Fr., WR - 10.52 100M as a Sr. in HS.
20.97 200M
I'm excited to see what he can bring to the WR room in a few years.
Parker Kingston, Fr - WR - 10.54 in the 100M in his final race of his HS career (according to the conversion chart above, he could run a mid to high 4.3 40)
Other times of note 6.96 60yd dash and 21.33 200M
McKenzie Brothers
Dominique, mission, will be a Fr., WR - 10.60 100M as a Jr. in HS.
Other times of note 20.73 200M as a Jr. in HS.
He didn't seem to run track his Sr season in HS. He wasn't much slower than Bair in the 200M. Having him and Hagen could be really fun to watch in 2025-26 timeframe
Marcus, will be a Fr - DB - 10.54 100M as a Sr. in HS.
21.28 200M as a Sr.
Quenton Rice, So. - DB - 10.64 as a Sr. in HS
21.54 200M
Zion Allen, Fr. - DB - 10.65 (slightly wind-aided) as a Sr. in HS
21.70 200M as a Sr.
Harrison Taggart, FR - LB - 10.69 (adjusted to 10.70 officially) as a Jr. in HS
Other times of note 7.02 60yd dash and 21.57 200M, which is incredible given his size. He also doesnt seem to have run track much his Sr. season in HS, so he could have even been faster that what these times indicate.
Malik Moore, Sr. - S - 10.84 100M as a Sr. in HS
21.91 200M
Deion Smith, Sr transfer from Colorado - RB - 10.85 100M as a Jr. in HS
22.06 200M
Caleb Christensen, Jr. - DB - 10.92 100M as a Jr. in HS
22.61 200M
Kevin Doe, will be a Fr. - Athlete - 10.67 100M
21.39 200M
Miles Davis, So. - RB - Ran his best 100M w/ a 11.52 which isn't necessarily all that fast, however, he ran a blazing 21.53 200M, which all the other guys on this list running the 200 that fast are 10.7ish 100M guys, so he likely just had bad starts and is actually pretty fast.
I'll put Micah Harper on here as he was close and ran a 11.00 as a Jr. in HS (had he run his Sr. year he may have gone sub-11
He also ran a respectable 21.78 200M as a Jr which is fast, and makes me think he could probably work on his starts and definitely get into the 10's or he's likely that fast now.
I looked up Mory Bamba, as he's supposedly fast, but he didn't have anything official in HS I could use here.
Interesting note- I also looked up Kaleb Hayes to see his best 100M time in HS, which was a 11.25 100M as a Jr., so according to the conversion above would put him at a 4.6 40 (interesting given his 4.3 at the BYU Pro day) However, it's also odd, because he ran a very respectable 21.64 200M also in HS. My best guess is that he, similar to Miles Davis, didn't have good technique out of the blocks, but once he gets up to speed, he cooks.
