I think the breadth of the sample is a little more than that. L.A. county is the biggest county in the country and
half of the county is Mexican. So you're going to have 100's of years of generations of Mexicans to draw from, ninos to abuelos for the living, you're going have every occupation imaginable, you're going to have a bunch of kids that have been bred American as apple pie(not really - it's California afterall)... went through local high schools and eventually to USC, UCLA, Hawthorne Community college, whatever where they've seen their peers get rewarded with popularity and such for playing those sports. They've played the sports in PE classes. USC has had outreach programs for hispanic(and Asian) kids at local schools for years to try to get them into more American style sports. And they witnessed Reggie Bush era USC....if any generation of Mexicans was going to take to college sports.....it should've been that one. But it really didn't long term. Now definitely many took to the Lakers, Dodgers, etc and they're are certainly college sports fans of that demographic so that's good. It's just not at the rate that schools like USC thought they would be able to wheel in local fans.

So why would we expect that a totally disconnected population would be like....yeah....I love college sports....especially the American sports? I'm going to spend my time watching Oklahoma State instead of CD Guadalajara or whatever. I'm tired of watching Chicarito or Messi or Ronaldo, Neymar. or whoever they're loving following there right now. And if they do like basketball....they're watch Bron or Steph Curry or something. The sliver of potential there just seems really small. But like I said, I don't think that's the Big 12's aim so it doesn't really matter.
