I think the opaqueness (and lack of willingness to discuss/critique/listen) is a huge factor here
Opaque about his weighting and he NEVER publishes his actual calculations & methodology

I've worked with BamaCoug on some things before and respect his stats ability (and believe he respects mine, though I don't want to put words in his mouth...keyboard?). Doesn't mean we always agree on things. He puts more weight on social media engagement and alumni base than I do, I probably put more weight on TV viewership and market size than he does. So we'll run analyses and get slightly different results.

And that's fine, doesn't mean I'm right and he's wrong or vice versa. It's absolutely OK to have slightly different processes and different results. But we're both up front about what we value, we both (as far as I know) define our metrics before starting analysis, and we're both open about our methodology AND open to discussion and critiques. And neither of us intentionally puts our thumb on the scale to get a specific result (Percent of student-athletes that are married has to be one of the biggest drivers in realignment, right? I should definitely add a heavily-weighted category for that).

And that last paragraph is where I have issues with Altimore. Because he's not an idiot. I don't particularly mind an obnoxious Utah fan overvaluing Utah (and their chances for the B1G) when they don't have the data or background to know better. They're just being a dumb fan. We've got plenty here who overvalue BYU as well. And that's fine, because when you approach things as a fan (and not a data scientist), your opinions/results don't HAVE to be well-justified. But Altimore HAS the data and the statistical chops to know better than what he's telling people

But he doesn't share his methodology (at least not beyond a surface level discussion), he isn't open to discussion or critique, and (given the previous) I'm not convinced he defines his metrics prior to analysis or avoids putting his thumb on the scale
