Like drinking, that is wilful negligence.
Distracted by kids is a somewhat different type of negligence, but can have the same result, so similar punishment isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Falling asleep is probably the one we have the least control over, especially when driving alone.
I support meaningful punishment for first time drunk driving offenders, regardless of whether someone gets hurt or killed. License revoked, loss of the vehicle and large fine is appropriate. Second offender should also earn serious jail time.
Full disclosure... I had a good friend killed in a head-on collision with a stolen car full of drunk illegals. He left a wife and six kids under 10 years old. The illegals fled the scene on foot and were eventually caught days later. Of course, none of them were driving or had had more than one drink, and according to their sworn testimony, the perp was a mythical 7th guy named Jose with an unknown last name.
