The Howard storyline is great (spoilers)
It holds a mirror up to the audience. They wrote him in such a way that we view him as a villain and it isn't until late in the series that you realize he was never a villain. I think it was partially a commentary on how viewers receive anti-heroes, but it also demonstrated how the invisible hand can be an unreliable narrator and we shouldn't always trust what the camera depicts.
