Anything is possible as long as you have some form of US-issued ID, but the amount of time you have to spend and the amount of frustration you cause the border officer. And, there's always the chance that they make you stay a night in Canada while your documents get shipped to you.

Bottom line, it sometimes depends on how busy/frustrated the officer you get is.
