It's why the Army had to institute rigorous testing to weed out applicants for
the Air Corps. Everyone knew that sleeping in your own bed in England would be worth a few hours of terror at 20,000 feet when compared with storming a beach and freezing in a fox hole.

Not casualty rate. 8th air force bomber crew people had a 65% casualty rate. Second only to uboat crews.
