I'm pretty sure Burgess will be the new bball coach. CB will meltdown that it isn't Madsen, and I think Madsen is a good coach too, but I think we have an even higher ceiling with Burgess. Also, I think Pope was a good coach, but not as amazing as last season indicated, and not as amazing as Kentucky thinks. I hope he does well, but that leash is going to be short at KY as the fans already aren't happy. I'm pulling for him.
I think the secret to Pope's success was more his ability to hire great assistants, and I think they are the real reason for our success last year. Unfortunately, Pope will likely take many of them to KY, but that's what I'm really anxious about ... learning how many of them go with Pope.
As for recruits, Burgess was Chandler's primary recruiter, so I think we have a good chance of keeping him. I'm sure Pope will try to take him to KY, so we'll just have to see which coach he trusts more. I think Khalifa staying is 50/50, and probably 65/35 that we keep Hall, and probably the same for Saunders whom Pope might try to bring as a 6th man off the bench ... but I think we'll keep the rest. We may not be able to be top 25 like people were hoping for next year, especially in Burgess' first year, but we'll be solid, and it'll be a good base to grow. I also think Burgess may surprise us on which assistants and recruits he can bring with him ... he seems well connected and well liked.
Oh, and I think Burgess is already hired and talking to recruits, but we won't hear about it for another week or two as it works its way through the Board of Trustees. But I think he's already doing the BYU job, and things are fine. CB will freak out when they don't hear anything official for a week or two, but those who need to know (e.g. players) will know that Burgess is here.
What do you all think about the changes? I'm still bullish on BYU's future, more so than many on CB seem to be right now.
