I think it is due to the relative interactivity of demand with a booming economy
Over the last few years with the aging and enriched boomer population and high tech salaries what used to be luxurious or rare and infrequent indulgences became much more commonplace and mainstream. That includes travel and lodging. The result is that the fringe benefits used as differentiators and subtle nice touches went away as they didn’t matter as much as price to a savvy shopper within price classes
