...They gave up at the Oregon border after hiking in melting snow and mud most of the route through the Sierra Mountains. Said they should have followed the advice given by several others who had hiked it previously... Go from north to south and be out of the snow by the time you cross the Columbia, rather than spend months following the thaw north.
