Don't know or care why - but I'm glad that they were.
Generally I'm OK with BYU keeping things close to the vest. It really isn't anyone's business.

But in this case - I think it benefits BYU a great deal.

We hear over and over again that BYU will never pay top dollar for coaches, will never try to compete, etc. We hear that part of the compensation is the blessing of being able to work at/for the church/BYU. So people should expect/accept lower pay.

This was a shot fired across the bow at everyone making those comments. BYU is here to win, not just happy to participate. They are committed to putting some cash up. They'll pay something that will attract good coaches a competitive salary without expecting those coaches to donate a portion by working for less.

I love that they are putting that out to fans, to recruits, to opponents, etc. We're here to compete and willing to commit the resources to do it.

Reality is - if he wasn't LDS and if his wife hadn't attended BYU, he probably doesn't come to Provo. Reality is he's being well paid, but not as well paid as an NBA head coach would be if he stuck around for one of those jobs. So maybe he's taking a slight cut over what he could get elsewhere based on who he is and the experience. Maybe. But he is being well compensated. And I love that someone let everyone know.
