I've had three of these where someone hit my backend.
This was all in one year. I began to think that car was possessed.

1st one, the guy gave me his insurance info, I contacted and they worked with me to get it fixed where ever I wanted it fixed and the shop coordinated a rental car with that insurance company. I did call police. They completed an accident report, but since it was on private property, they didn't cite the individual, but it was at least on official record. It was in a doctor's parking lot.

2nd one, the woman was driving a friends SUV that didn't have insurance. She had 3 small children in the car who weren't seat-belted in, so I didn't contact police. I should have. She offered to pay cash. The owner didn't want to pay at first, but I reminded him it was his vehicle and he allowed the lady to drive it. I finally got it covered and she paid, but there arose this issue with this guy and the woman and I was kind of in between. I ended up getting it fixed at a dealership where the SUV owner worked, but because he paid as an employee, the work wasn't guaranteed and there was some issues that arose that I had to deal with on my own.

3rd one, a guy hit me in a Holiday Inn Express parking lot. I called the police once again to get an accident report. He gave me his insurance info and I contacted them and they took total care of the whole situation. He had Allstate insurance. I was so impressed in how they helped me that I cancelled my policy and I've had a policy with Allstate ever since.

If your insurance gets involved, there's the possibility they will record it. Remember, insurance companies don't give a rat's petutie if your are at fault or not. You were in an accident and they'll note it and it will affect your rates.

Contrary to what others are saying here, the only time I would contact my insurance company is if the other individual is not insured and now I'll need to invoke my uninsured motorist coverage. Otherwise, work with the other person's insurance company. Maybe those individuals who are saying contact your insurance have a "special" agent that will do the work for you. I called mine and they had told me that if they get involved, it will be on my record with the insurance company and will affect my rate.
