I’d say let university pay players directly or change NIL portal rules
The idea of NIL is all about your name image and likeness being worth something. Fans should pay for tickets, merch, watch games/commentary on TV, etc. if the money made on that is not allowed to be paid to athletes it is probably because universities need a couple of sports (football, men’s basketball) to fund all other sports. Either we let the money “earned” by athletes accrue to the athletes creating the value or we artificially say it can’t. If we stick to rules saying universities don’t pay athletes directly and keep with Title IX principles, then we need better rules for the rest of NIL/transfer portal to work better. It’s currently broken…and not because it’s a bad idea to let athletes make some money.
