Think about it. There's an LDS coach at the head of Kentucky (SEC), Cal (ACC), and BYU (B12). While BYU will obviously have LDS assistants and no doubt Utah will continue to do so as well, to the extent that the other coaches pick some up that builds a network of LDS P4 basketball coaches. Utah is problematic because they represent direct competition for players. The other schools will not provide as direct competition for players and so if those programs are successful then it costs BYU little or nothing, but benefits BYU in the long term.
If KY is successful at BYU, which I think he absolutely will be, and Pope and Madsen are successful where they are, then that bodes well for there being more inventory in the future if/when BYU needs a new HC or even just needs to replace an assistant coach. I would strongly prefer to have options for a coaching pool outside of Utah/UVU down the road. So, even though I didn't love the way Pope went out, I'm not cheering against him at Kentucky. Better him than another Calipari/Pitino.
