Cal knows that its BB program is facing a huge uphill battle going forward, which means stability for Madsen even if he doesn't catch fire right away. That's not a bad spot for an ACC Basketball coaching gig. They extended his contract just for approaching .500 in the P12 because Cal has been so bad for so long and they know it's a complete rebuilding project. He'll have more grace in losses when his team has to travel to the East Coast every other conference game, but his program will also probably have the biggest "in-conference" home court advantage in the country as measured by travel time. Madsen will be able to stick at Cal for a long time even if he's just okay.
