Magic had just as good of a 9 year stretch…in fact compare age 23-31 for both
Both had 9 1st team all-nba
Both had 3 mvp
Both had 3 titles
Bird did have a 2-1 finals mvp advantage
Magic had a slight edge in WS/48, BPM, and PER
Magic finished 1st 3 times, 2nd twice, and 3rd 4 times in MVP.
Bird finished 1st 3 times, 2nd 4 times, and 3rd once.
Bird went to 5 finals
Magic went to 7 finals
Fairly close…I think you could make an argument for either, but…
Then you find out in the other 4 years each played, Magic won 2 more titles and 2 more FMVP. Bird won 2 playoff series. That’s a clincher for me.
Also bird broke down physically and that’s why he tailed off. Magic could have played more if we understood more about HIV…it’s not really fair to give Magic credit for games he didn’t play, but he would’ve added more to his resume. He was still near the top of his game when he left.
