Water softeners do not reduce total dissolved solids. You are still going to have organic matter (potassium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides, sulfates etc) unless you put in a filter.

All a water softener does is replace the calcium and magnesium ions ... it doesn't remove anything else.
