Some athletes have already been hit with bad NIL deals.Legal help is needed
There have already been a few cases leaked out to the media, where athletes are signing bad NIL deals, which have penalties for leaving early, or give the sponsors rights to not only the athlete’s college years, but through their NFL and retirement years. It is scary to see a 17-20 year old signing NIL deals without any legal advice, which is why I commend BYU for being proactive in assisting with NIL advice and restrictions. A company that sponsors a blue chip athlete with a big deal or high end car, is not doing so out of the kindness of their heart. They are obviously expecting return on their investment. I expect to start seeing more public lawsuits from NIL companies that either didn’t get what was contractually expected from the athlete, or whose contracts were corrupted and expect part of the athlete’s future contracts.
