Looking at reviews, this may not be as effective as it used to be, which is what we used growing up.

Just use Roundup. Roundup primarily works when absorbed through the leaves.

I've used roundup around my trees for 25 years. It's never been an issue

This is accurate. Just for kicks, I get cardboard and tape it to the tree.

How big is the tree? I doubt the grass is really competing with it at all unless it’s a very small one.

Depends on the type of grass… there’s no keeping Bermuda or other grasses that spread by rhizomes out.
