I would give it a couple of drives first. Air in the fluid can make it act weird and it can take a bit for the air to escape.
But went through two, maybe even three, pumps before I ended up replacing the rack and most of the hoses and lines. I believe the rack had bad seals and was leaking. That allowed air in and contaminated the fluid. The pump was the victim.
Steering rack was a big job as it requires removing the final front drive (differential) and the CV axles and tie rods. Had to get an alignment done after. But it totally fixed it.
If there's any good news to my story it is that I bought the pump at AutoZone and only paid for one as they unquestioningly replaced it after less than a year and then again after like a month. I ended up buying lots of fluid and shop towels from them . . . .
