I've done them both, I-70 or I-80. Either way, bring audiobooks.
Both have boring stretches, both have some mountains.
In my opinion, regardless of which one you take, hop on the PA turnpike east of Ohio until Breezewood PA, and then take 70 east.

If you haven’t done Mt Rushmore I’d go a northern route

If you take their kids, they will actually give you some donut holes too.

I would check to see which baseball teams are home those days and then try to catch a game or two.

Agreed. Take the route with stuff along the way that you'd prefer to see.

That's a 30+ hour drive by the fastest route. Doing it in 3-4 days really doesn't leave any time to stop and see places
