Done this drive dozens of times. My new favorite route is I80 to Lincoln NE,
NE2/I29 to St Joes, MO
US36 to Hannibal, MO
I72/I74 to Indy
I70 to Washington, PA
I79 to Morgantown, WV
I68 to Hancock, MD
from there you have options (I70, US522, I66)
No tolls on this route. Way less traffic than I80. Avoids traffic/construction in Illinois. Avoids PA turnpike. Not how it would fit with your tourism priorities. I am usually in a hurry whichever direction I am going.
