I think both. There's the guilt of knowing he couldn't be there to fight with
them, but also the relief of not being in the midst of all that hell. Shortly after getting discharged he met my Mom and they got Married.

It's not something he really talked about. Growing up my Dad was very mum on his upbringing and other things. There's a lot I didn't discover til I was on my mission or afterwards. For example: I never knew my paternal grandfather (his Dad). It wasn't until I was on my mission where I'd learned his real Dad left him and his Mom when he was just a 6 yr old boy and later on committed suicide. I didn't have a clue. My Dad just didn't talk about that stuff.
