They had never really heard much about the military (different branches) and wars - esp WWII. So I had the special and unique opportunity to share with them some introductory information about wars that the US has been in and in particular about WWII. We got out of the car and walked through the rows of tombstones and flags. I was able to tell them about what was on the tombstones (religious preference, what war they fought in, how old they were, when they were born, what KIA means, spouses, etc.). In addition to the crosses and the angel Moroni carving on some of them - we saw a Star of David and then talked about what happened to the Jews during that time. (I hope I didn't scar them for life.). I also was able to share with them about some of the wars that their great-grandfathers (WWII and Viet Nam) and great-great-grandfathers fought in (WWII). It was a very special and unique experience to share with my granddaughters about our country and what it means to fight for freedom.
It might be too early for them - but I am now looking for any movies that I could share with them on Monday about WWII. Any suggestions - esp for younger ages? (Or maybe I need to wait a couple of years before traumatizing them too much.)
