I was born and raised in the south and personally love them. My experience has been that, for whatever reason, westerners find them a bit gross and generally do not like them.

I've also heard of a few misguided souls that were snookered into eating the shells with their boiled peanuts. This is not a generally accepted method for eating boiled peanuts. Just an fyi.
