I was corresponding via email, and had spoken with one of the partners via phone, and knew him. they even set up my interview via email. I had the interview and they were doing only 1 call-back. I got the call back, but my cell-phone had died and the notification of the new VM message never registered. I went out of town for the weekend and kept checking my email. On Monday I called and they had given the job to someone else. No email. No follow-up phone call the next day. I missed the message, and I was out.
