have any semblance of relevance going forward is to be a part of a conference. Why? Bronco.
Bronco has shown time and again that he cannot lead this team to an undefeated season. Even in his best years as a coach (2006-2009), Bronco was unable to lose fewer than 2 games. This year, he had the schedule and the team set up on a silver platter to run the table and he has mismanaged his staff (yet again) and the wheels have come off (yet again).
So, if BYU is going to maintain its stubbornness and keep Bronco, it needs to join a conference. If Boise, BYU, Fresno, and SDSU all joined the AAC as FB-only members, the MWC would be decimated from a SOS standpoint and would become a hiss and a by-word with the committee that chooses the NY6 teams. The MWC would be in the same category as CUSA, the MAC and the Sun Belt.
Sure, BYU would not be in a P5 conference. But, there is truth in the math: P5 > AAC + (BSU/BYU/FSU/SDSU) >> Indy >>> MWC - (BSU/FSU/SDSU).
