It seems some of us desperately want everything in black and white. Some want to know EXACTLY what they can and can't do in any given situation or circumstance without exception.
Thats just not how things work. In every decision there is compromise. The decision is the school doesn't compete on 1 day each week. BYU's profile is raised by competition. The church benefits. The logistics around that can lead to some travel issues but thats the compromise. I expect LDS to be pragmatists, not rationalists. Nephi was a pragmatist when he cut off Laban head. In general you don't cut someone's head off, but its not wrong under the right circumstances.
People are never going to 100% agree on what is or is not appropriate for Sabbath worship. We can't even agree in my own house. Each will make his/her own decision and everyone else is free to do the same or not. No need to really debate it unless you're a bishop, parent, or other church leader acting under inspiration.
