it didn't ruin the engine like it would have in most cars. They put in a new water pump as well. This was in California and I believe my FIL spent $1,200 to fix it. She drives a '99 Civic. They'll have to make sure the valves aren't bent, if you've been trying to crank the engine. But I was there when her's went out and it made the same noise you're describing.
