Very common. Pres. Eyring talked about a similar situation with his parents.

As someone who always lived in the midwest and never close to family...it sure would be nice sometimes. But most of the time I like being apart. I think it helps the couple to leave your family, cleave unto each other, and nobody else. Forces you to serve and be active in a church / ward full of people different than you, which brings a lot of personal growth that you can't always get if your surrounded by the comfortable confines of family. Although I grew up far from extended family, so I was used to it.

I'd add that I see this in non-mormon circles as well, to a lesser degree.
