It's a bonding moment for the couple. Mom had her time.

We are to cleave to our spouse and nobody else. Cut the yewting cord. (I did by the way.) What possible value does she add to the experience? Support? no, That is the husband's job. See point above. Experience? Nope. She had kids 25 years ago. The medical field has changed since she had kids. Its even more completely pointless if this is a second child or beyond.
