just the book. Personally I thought they could have wrapped it up in two movies, but with most things hollywood they look to maximize earning potential. so pulling in footnotes to fill in the gaps and give some context to how this rolls into LOTR is ok with me. I liked the first movie and was ok with the second. I would like the third to end it well. Crossing my fingers.
