Can't let this go uncontested. The vast majority of Jackson's additions do not

come from footnotes and Tolkien's other works. Jackson does try to show some things that happen off screen in the book (like Gandalf going to the Necromancer's lair). But most of the other additions are pure Jackson, and awful at that. The Hobbit movies are more Jackson than Tolkien.
