I personally don't shoot in that circumstance unless I cannot retreat and it
becomes more likely that my family or other innocent people will be killed. Then I shoot to kill, and I would not feel responsible for the kid's death.
There have been some cases in the news recently where innocent people were killed during the course of a crime being committed, and the surviving criminals were charged with murder even if they weren't the ones that actually killed the person.
