Because it's virtually never used outside of football, as in to deride

Native Americans, I think it is a benign term. I have never flinched or seen anyone else before the current furor flinch or think twice about calling the Redskins, the Redskins. Ever. If it's morphed recently it's because certain political types today want an axe to grind.
