A 40 yard FG should never be considered easy points
I analyzed all the FG attempts in games between D1A teams after the 2006 season, and from LoS 23-24 kickers were 78/135 (57.8%). Note also that this is *less* field goal attempts than were tried from 21-22 (150 attempts), so the weaker-legged kickers are already being kept from trying the attempt.

This is independent of the fact that settling for field goals is one of the most destructive things an offense can do in the first place. From the 23 yard line, barring a game-ending situation a first down is more valuable than a *made* field goal, and no kicker makes them all from this distance.

Bronco has devoted scholarships to both punters and kickers in his tenure, which isn't consistent with completely ignoring the kicking game. I'd like to see him ignore the FG kicker more often.
