Too much loyalty
Perhaps BYU was too loyal to the WAC and MWC. They should have made moves in the 1980s out of the WAC, but were too comfortable and enjoyed playing in the same conference as Utah. They thought in the last decade the MWC could become something, but that came crashing down when Utah left.
