but I think what you see more than anything is a bodies response to lower oxygen levels so they produce more red blood cells vs. a genetically altered RBC that is more efficient at delivering oxygen. Kind of like blood doping. Sickle Cell RBCs actually change their conformation in acidic/low O2 environments and clog the vessels. A sickle cell crisis is excruciatingly painful and potentially fatal.
