Don't forget displaced champions
Because the Rose and Sugar Bowls are hosting the CFP semi-finals, if a PAC 12, Big Ten, SEC, or Big 12 champion doesn't make the CFP, then they are a "displaced champion" and automatically get a selection in one of the NY6 bowl game openings. This year, it is looking like the Big Ten, at least, will be a displaced champion and will get a spot in one of the Peach, Fiesta, or Cotton Bowls. Big 12 or PAC 12 could end up there as well.

The rankings of those displaced champions and the G5 champion will determine how high BYU needs to finish to get an NY6 bid.

Right now, my prediction is that the #5 and #6 spots will be taken up by either an SEC runner-up or the PAC 12 champion and the Big Ten champion, but one of them will go to the Orange Bowl. So that will leave 4 openings in the NY6 access bowls and BYU will need to be ranked #7-10 to get an NY6 bid.
