I do not disagree that the LHN was probably a sticking point. But at the end of the day I bet the $$$$ from staying the Big 12 versus a super conference with the PAC 12 would have been at least quite similar or better for everyone (including Texas). However, you shouldn't discount what ended up not being said. No program is going to come out and admit that they were concerned about how often they would have access to the playoff with having more top competitors in a conference. It is quite obvious though that these teams want to continue to keep a winning tradition and have relatively easy access to the playoffs and that depends quite significantly on who you play. In this way, $$$$ is actually still the driving force, just not in the explicit way you think it is. It has more to do with keeping a winning tradition (which keeps the stadiums filled, donors, etc.)
