If he didn't have a track record of insulting his own fans, nobody would notice.
I'm sure he was genuinely thankful for those that stayed.
But his public history of fan resentment made it pretty easy to interpret the double emphasis he placed on the "many" who left as a passive aggressive jab.
Yes, it's easy enough to give him the benefit if the doubt over such a small comment. But, I don't have any reason to based on history. Just my opinion.
