I don't think Bronco should be fired. That would be a mistake. But, I also don't think he'd be as difficult to replace as some think.
There's a fairly simple, proven system that works at BYU. As long as an otherwise decent coach follows that system and enforces the honor code, he'll have about the same success that Bronco has had.
There will be individual ebbs and flows (i.e. Bronco is better at defense, but sucks at rivalry games) but the overall output will be about the same.
"But what about Gary Crowton?" you ask?
Well, Gary didn't follow the system and he didn't enforce the honor code. He came in and tried to push LaVell's ways (and people) out the door.
You'll also remember that he wasn't the guy most insiders wanted. LaVell and the like wanted Andy Reid.
At any rate, I'm sure there are potential Crowtons out there who would mess things up. But, the formula for basic success at BYU is so obvious at this point that there are plenty of viable candidates who could come in and do at least as well as Bronco.
Sooner or later we will have to replace Bronco. To me, the big question isn't whether or not we can get somebody as good. It's whether or not we can find someone who can run the same system better, and go a bit further with his own unique strengths than Bronco did with his.
