it's possible that...

... Lavell might have had Reid #1 but because Andy Reid wasn't a viable option (he was hitting his prime with Philly), had Crowton as his next option. It's also very likely that within the Athletic Dept there were a lot of old-timers that saw Crowton as an outsider and they wanted a BYU man hired for the job.
