What you have to remember is that BYU was looked down on for
not playing "real foootball." I remember one coach denigrating BYU and saying that we played basketball on a football field. Unlike today, people did not jump on the latest newest thing. College coaches were more hidebound and committed to tradition. They idolized coaches who had spent a lifetime promoting the "three yards and a cloud of dust" offensive philosophy. It took quite a number of years for BYU style passing offense to become widely utilized.
