except that there were better records being kept at that point than in 1951. In 1951 there were two major tournaments with the NIT and NCAA, with the NIT being the more notable tournament through the mid 50's. Highly ranked teams went to both tournaments and the champion of each tournament was deemed National Champion at the time as the NCAA touney was gaining momentum and attraction. BYU did not put up a banner or anything for it but other teams of that day who won the NIT before and after BYU did.
