Punting from your end zone puts the ball at your own 40 or so IF you're lucky (you generally don't kick as far since you have a lot more to worry about). That all but guarantees a field goal attempt with just a few yards picked up.

Of course there may have been other factors at play... still quite a bit of time left, lots of high numbers on offense, so perhaps they would have taken it all the way anyway.
