Pay him well and pay him up front
It is really easy to get him. Drive up the Brinks truck, take out $500k, bring it to him, and say "as you know, Bronco has said he doesn't want to coach forever. Here is your signing bonus to be DC, and you get $250K more as the rest of your salary. You have 24 hours to decide before we give this money to the next candidate."

You want to show a professional respect and make sure their opinion will be heard, you've got to show them the money. It is all hot air until you pay out the real stuff. Putting out the big bonus with the 24 hour signing window will hamstring the ability of other teams to match the offer. With the job he did this year, his market worth is at least $750K. Pay him what he's worth, with a big bonus upfront, and a tight signing timeline, and if he will take it.

Finally, DC is a bit of step down for him as right now he is assistant head coach. But, it is that much more of a coup if we get him to agree to it. It is saying to the entire state that we are going big time. A P5 assistant head coach going down in position to coach at BYU - huge deal, and it will work if we pay him what he is worth, and quit trying to get people on the cheap.

Go Cougs!!!!!
