The truth is that it would be somewhat easier to get to a NY6 bowl in a G5 conference. There would be years when even a two loss BYU team would qualify. In independence, we might still grab a NY6 bowl some years with one loss, but I think most of the time we'd have to be undefeated to grab an at-large spot. Anyway, I think it more likely that we'd be able to grab NY6 appearances in the MWC.

However, that improved chance at a NY6 bowl appearance would come at a cost. We'd be giving up on any real chance at a playoff berth. A G5 program is just never going to have strong enough strength of schedule, which is apparent looking at how the playoff committee is ranking the top G5 programs this year. And, of course, we'd have to give up the advantages we have in independence over G5 programs (TV, money, better schedule, etc.). It's just not worth it. Not even close, in my book.
